The Windber Area Community Kitchen (WACK) is a non-profit organization located in the Windber Calvary United Methodist Church serving Somerset, Bedford, and Cambria Counties and does not discriminate on the basis of sex, religion, race, age, disability, ethnic background or economic status. The Windber Area Community Kitchen operates two programs with the HOPE to help alleviate food insecurities in our communities. We started our first onsite program in 2009 which is our Saturday Meals. We provide healthy, home-cooked meals two Saturdays a month. Our second and newest program started in 2015 which is our pantry that operates a backpack program (a nationwide known program) called WACKPacks. The WACKPack Program provides for children who qualify for free or reduced lunches through the Windber School District’s Elementary School with non-perishable food items over weekends and extended breaks during the school year.
All Saturday meals are served from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM. We serve between 155 to 185 people. We provide a lite lunch on the fourth Wednesday in conjunction with the Somerset County Mobile Food Bank’s distribution at Windber Calvary United Methodist Church. Our mission is to feed both body and soul. The board of directors, staff, and over 600 volunteers of WACK work together to provide healthy home cooked meals and ensure we are a positive influence in the lives of those we serve. While the meal is the common denominator it becomes the link to bring many people together. It allows those who serve to provide friendship, fellowship and general humanity to all. We believe it is important for people to feel the warmth, kindness, and understanding of others. We hope our presence may provide that little bit of needed compassion for someone in need of uplifting. The kitchen is the place in the home where people gather with family and we want our guests to have those same feelings about our kitchen. Throughout the years we have been blessed and we hope to be a blessing to those we serve.
Windber Area Community Kitchen exists solely on the kindness of our volunteers and the many, many individuals, churches, and businesses who donate to our programs.
Our door is open to everyone who comes.
